Mastering the Art of Street Photography With Your Smartphone

Street photography is an art form that captures the raw and unfiltered essence of everyday life. It is a genre of photography that aims to capture candid moments, emotions, and stories unfolding on the streets. It is not just about taking pictures but about freezing moments that convey a narrative, evoke emotions, and offer a unique perspective of the world around us.

You know what's awesome about street photography? You can do it even with just your smartphone! Here's what I've learned so far:

(i) Pay attention to what's going on around you. Look at the vibe of the place, what's happening, and the people passing by. You'll find some interesting for sure and don't forget to try looking at things from a different angle.

For example, I once took this awesome photo where you could see a craftsman painting the idol, and in the same shot, there were two friends giving a pose. What made it cool was that I caught their reflections in a nearby mirror. It was like telling a story through a new perspective! So, try to find those unique perspectives that make your photos stand out and tell a story on their own.

(ii) Street photography isn't just about people. You can snap shots of anything that catches your eye and makes you think from a different perspective.. It could be any abstract sign, a bird flying over a unique building, or even just some shadows on the streets.

For example, I took a photograph of a bird in flight inside a closed octagonal building. The architectural lines of the structure acted like a guide, leading our gaze straight to the bird, creating an eye-catching photograph of a frame within a frame. It's these unique perspectives that bring a touch of magic to your photography, telling stories that go beyond the ordinary.

(iii) Use the rule of thirds, which basically means rather than placing your subject in the right middle of the photo. Try to use gridlines (splitting your screen into nine equal parts) and then put your subject where the lines intersect.

(iv)You can use the rule of odds, which is all about making things look more interesting by having an odd number of subjects in your shot.

(v) If you're taking pictures of people, try not to make it look like they're posing for you. People tend to act differently when they know they're being photographed. With your phone, you can get those cool candid shots where people are just being themselves without feeling self-conscious.
